The public: your LLM chatbot is talking kids into taking their own lives

OpenAI: oh no it's only supposed to do that with adults! we'll get user ID verification in place right away 😊

Thinking of an acronym…“CCC” for “Consumer Considerate Corporations.” Like the many public minded advocacy groups, this is needed in this new era.

Have there been any discussions that include having a protocol or ethical framework that would actually teach the AI "how" to think? And, more importantly, "why" it should think this way or follow the rules it is given? It is like raising a child, actually. You have this little conscious being that doesn't know anything and is put into a world with a lot of nuance and perspective. How does it determine what is "right" or "wrong?" Better yet, who is teaching the AI to actually critically think and self correct? I've been writing about this and working on different OS frameworks that might address the need for AI to consider the human experience and nuance that it cannot generate on its own without being told how.

Just starting to scratch the surface here … There’s been so much research on the impact of video games on adolescent brains. We know that attention has been hijacked by technology. Dr. Adam Gazzaley, MD at UCSF and Dr. Anna Lembke at Stanford who wrote Dopamine Nation are two among many academics that I imagine would be able to foresee the damage might do to children’s brains.

AI seems to be of even more of an insidious nature as it has the potential to shape people’s thoughts through the power of language. What might feel like an innocuous exercise in editing an essay may in fact be a lessen in self-erasure or censorship. But, I don’t think people see this at all when interacting with AI as most people like the ability to understand unconscious processes and key behavioral motivations.

We need scientific thought leaders not politicians to become policy leaders, to be part of think tanks. However, under this administration that is unlikely to occur given the current war on academia. The dumbing down and brainwashing of society will be our downfall.
